A Soldier’s Deathsong

Note: This is a camp song (the sheet music for which is posted here) meant to be sung by soldiers, with each return of the refrain increasing in length.

I’ve killed many men, sir,
I’ve killed many men,
I’ve thrown them off walls to fall to their death.
I’ve killed many men, sir,
I’ve killed many men,
Sir, I’ve plunged my swift sword through their necks, sir.

Tell me, sir, where shall I go now?
Tell me sir, why should I go now?

I’ve kept to my dues, sir,
I’ve kept to my dues,
I’ve turned my ear deaf to wife and to child.
I’ve kept to my dues, sir,
I’ve kept to my dues,
Sir, I’ve killed my own kin for your war, sir.

Tell me, sir, where shall I go now?
Tell me, sir, why should I go now?
I’ve prayed o’er their bodies,
I’ve cried o’er their kin,
And yet- men fall still.

I’ve shed so much blood, sir,
I’ve shed so much blood,
I’ve made simple streets to flow with my hand.
I’ve shed so much blood, sir,
I’ve shed so much blood,
Sir, I’ve dyed my coat red for your hand, sir.

Tell me, sir, where shall I go now?
Tell me, sir, why should I go now?
I’ve prayed o’er their bodies,
I’ve cried o’er their kin,
And yet- men fall still.
His blood should atone,
His blood will atone,
This is all I can hold to my breast, sir.

I leave now and go, sir,
I leave now and go,
I go to the throne in heaven’s height set.
I leave now and go, sir,
I leave now and go,
Sir… No. What shall I find when I die, Lord?

The sheet music (with accompanying words) is posted here.
