The Dark and Silent Land

Note: Last edited 2/3/18. A fantasy poem about a bit of my unifying world, set in its far past.

Darkness fills this land once bright,
And light escapes mortal sight.
Man wanders through desert long.
This land knows not right or wrong.

Glad homes with treeish wall- stand
Stood once amidst this land.
Armies came and broke its song;
This land knows not right or wrong.

Long leaves, green grass, and white walls,
Dwarves tended and shaped and called,
Till daemons killed the gay throng.
This land knows not right or wrong.

Children played and laughed aloud.
Joyous mother, fathers proud
Hate sought death to prolong.
This land knows not right or wrong

Green vines upon the trees leaned;
Tall willows like May poles preened.
Burning ash tumbling along.
This land knows not right or wrong.

They came and flayed flesh from bone,
Flayed life from blood, earth from stone,
Muted great God’s light and song.
This land knows not right or wrong.

They darkened the light and drowned
The song of the heavens round.
Broke was evil shaming song.
This land knows not right or wrong.

Silenced conscience, heaven’s tune.
Of water there is no boon.
Evil stalks this place for long.
This land knows not right or wrong.
